[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] KARD: 'We can't wait to show you how KARD continues to evolve' [ENG/ESP]

Six years after their last visit to Spain, KARD are finally returning to reconnect with their Spanish Hidden Kards. As they prepare to take the stage once again as part of their European PLAYGROUND tour, the group continues to prove that their journey is one defined by evolution, experimentation, and an unmistakable connection with their fans.

Ahead of the European leg of the tour, Inma Exma had the opportunity to sit down with BM, J.seph, Somin, and Jiwoo for an exclusive conversation about their return to Spain, life on the road, the evolution of their performances, and the creative process behind their music. The members also opened up about how they have changed since their debut, the artists they aspire to become, and what they hope to explore next.

From unforgettable tour moments to future musical ambitions, KARD take us behind the scenes and share a glimpse of the journey that has brought them to where they are today.

Inma Exma: First of all, thank you for taking the time to answer my questions, being able to interview you is an honor! It's been 6 years since the last time you came to Spain with a tour, how does it feel to be back? Is there something you were really looking forward to when coming back to Spain?

 

BM: It feels amazing. As much as we would have loved to come more often, I'm still glad we are able to come with much more new songs that the fans have never seen live.

 

Somin: I am so happy to be able to visit Spain again, a country that is so beautiful in my memory! I'm happy to be reunited with our Spanish fans after a long time, and I hope we'll have as much fun together this time as we did before.

 

Inma Exma: What Spanish food have you tried? Is there something you haven't tried out yet but you would like to?

 

J.seph: I'm a big fan of Gambas al Ajillo and I make them myself, but I'd love to experience the local flavor.

 

Jiwoo: I tried Paella! But maybe what I had was a Korean-style Paella, I'd like to try real Paella in Spain.

 

Inma Exma: During a tour and also during live performances many difficulties and problems aries, is there any experience or anecdote from previous tours (or this one) that you could share with us?

 

BM: Our tours don’t consist of too many problems. But I do struggle to keep maintaining my weight because I love indulging in the local delicacies a bit too much😅

 

Jiwoo: There is an episode during the US Tour when my in ear and microphones both broke. The microphone probably broke due to sweat, and the in-ears probably broke due to the fact that I've been using them for so long. I got a new microphone!

 

Inma Exma: The nervousness and all the feelings you might get before a concert, does it remain the same as when you first started or has it changed throughout the years?

 

J.seph: At the beginning after our debut, I was so nervous that there were times where it felt like the music was sped up and sometimes it felt like it was slowed down. This is no longer a problem now that I have more experience performing!

 

Somin: It's definitely different now than it was right after our debut! Now I'm able to have fun by interacting with our fans a little more and making eye contact. There were times in the beginning when I was so nervous that I couldn't remember how I managed to do it. I used to working really hard to perform, and now I can work hard and have fun at the same time.

 

Inma Exma: Recently you had your comeback with 'ICKY'. When recording the songs in the studio, how do you prepare yourself to get 'into character' and deliver the message and concept of the song? Do you try to remember an experience that made you feel the way the lyrics explain or do you make up a scenario in your heard in order to try to get the feeling at that very moment?

Somin: When I close my eyes and sing the song, I feel the lyrics more, and I imagine the feeling I want to deliver. When I'm singing a song and I'm singing it thinking that those lyrics are something that I've been through, I feel like I'm able to get a little more into it.

 

Jiwoo: I try to convey as much mood and nuance as possible. I even close the curtains and lower the brightness of the lights so I can focus when I'm recording.

 

 

Inma Exma: Now going back to your pre-debut days for a moment, is there something that back then you thought it was impossible for you to do or achieve but in the end you were able to do it?

 

BM: Debuting itself was such a farfetched idea in itself. But being able to come this far, I feel like anything is possible. We have such a strong direction for our group so I feel like at this point, the only way to go is up.

 

J.seph: I thought the whole "debut" thing would never happen in my lifetime. Thinking about it I’ve been a singer for seven-year in the blink of an eye! There have always been glorious moments, and I think it's been a great fortune to be able to experience them.

 

Inma Exma: It's been 7 years since your debut, how do you think you have changed and improved both individually and as a group during these years?

 

BM:  Musically, I have a strong direction for our future records for my group and my solo songs. There's a lot you need to learn to consider when selecting your tracks for your album and I feel like I have only been improving- thus making my job more and more exciting as time passes!

 

J.seph: There was a time when it was my first debut, my first comeback, my first tour. Everything was unfamiliar, and there were times when I felt silly. Even now, of course, I don't think I’m completely refined, but I'm trying my best to challenge myself more and develop constantly.

 

Somin: I think we've all developed as individuals and a group! Personally, I like to think about the image I'm trying to pull off. We're making sure to make it work, and as the four members of KARD, we've been talking a lot about future KARD and pushing to make it happen. We're constantly thinking about how to better showcase ourselves in the future. We can't wait to show you how KARD continues to evolve.

 

Jiwoo: I'm trying to focus on being as objective as possible. At the same time, I'm trying to pursue more creative things.

 

Inma Exma: In terms of music, is there any style you would like to explore and try?

 

BM:  HipHop and R&B are the biggest for me. I love dancing and can't wait to put out this solo EP with it’s performances.

 

Somin: I want to try really really sexy R&B!

 

Inma Exma: Apart from the skills an artist should possess in order to be considered an 'artist', what other qualities do you think an artist must have?

 

J.seph: Compromise with oneself. I guess one shouldn't obsess over their shortcomings, which are only visible to themselves. This is when the people you work with can become uncomfortable. I think you have to compromise with yourself in that regard.

 

Jiwoo: A mindset of never becoming complacent. Loving and appreciating fans. Managing your private life.

 

 

Inma Exma: What would you like to say to your Spanish and international fans?

 

J.seph: Thank you for being a part of KARD and always keeping your spirits high. We’ll always work hard to make sure your favourite KARD looks great. I am so grateful and happy for your continued amazing love.

As KARD continue to grow and evolve, both individually and as a group, their passion for music and for connecting with their fans remains at the heart of their journey. Seis años después de su última visita a España, KARD regresa para reencontrarse con sus Hidden Kards españoles. Inma Exma: En primer lugar, muchas gracias por dedicar tiempo a responder a nuestras preguntas. ¡Es un honor poder entrevistaros! Han pasado 6 años desde la última vez que vinisteis a España con una gira. ¿Cómo os sentís al estar de vuelta? ¿Hay algo que os hiciera especial ilusión al regresar a España?

BM: Se siente increíble. Aunque nos hubiera encantado venir más a menudo, me alegra que podamos volver con muchas más canciones nuevas que los fans nunca han visto en directo.

Somin: Estoy muy feliz de poder visitar España de nuevo, ¡un país que recuerdo como un lugar precioso! Estoy feliz de reencontrarme con nuestros fans españoles después de tanto tiempo, y espero que esta vez nos divirtamos juntos tanto como lo hicimos anteriormente.

Inma Exma:¿Qué comida española habéis probado? ¿Hay algo que todavía no hayáis probado pero que os gustaría probar?

J.seph: Soy un gran fan de las gambas al ajillo y las preparo yo mismo, pero me encantaría probar el sabor local.

Jiwoo: ¡He probado la paella! Pero quizá la que comí era una paella al estilo coreano. Me gustaría probar la verdadera paella en España.

Inma Exma: Durante una gira y también durante las actuaciones en directo surgen muchas dificultades y problemas. ¿Hay alguna experiencia o anécdota de giras anteriores (o de esta) que podáis compartir con nosotros?

BM: Nuestras giras no suelen tener demasiados problemas. Pero sí me cuesta mantener mi peso porque me encanta disfrutar un poco demasiado de las delicias locales 😅

Jiwoo: Hay una anécdota de la gira por Estados Unidos en la que se rompieron tanto mi in-ear como mis micrófonos. Probablemente el micrófono se rompió por el sudor, y los in-ears probablemente se rompieron porque los he estado utilizando durante mucho tiempo. ¡Conseguí un micrófono nuevo!

Inma Exma: Los nervios y todas las emociones que podéis sentir antes de un concierto, ¿siguen siendo los mismos que cuando empezasteis o han cambiado a lo largo de los años?

J.seph: Al principio, después de nuestro debut, estaba tan nervioso que hubo veces en las que sentía que la música iba más rápido y otras en las que parecía que iba más despacio. ¡Esto ya no es un problema ahora que tengo más experiencia actuando!

Somin: Definitivamente es diferente ahora que justo después de nuestro debut. Ahora puedo divertirme interactuando un poco más con nuestros fans y haciendo contacto visual. Al principio hubo momentos en los que estaba tan nerviosa que no podía recordar cómo conseguía hacerlo. Antes trabajaba muy duro para actuar, y ahora puedo trabajar duro y divertirme al mismo tiempo.

Inma Exma: Recientemente habéis regresado con ‘ICKY’. Cuando grabáis las canciones en el estudio, ¿cómo os preparáis para meteros en el personaje y transmitir el mensaje y el concepto de la canción? ¿Intentáis recordar alguna experiencia que os haya hecho sentir de la manera que explican las letras o imagináis una situación en vuestra cabeza para intentar alcanzar esa sensación en ese momento?

Somin: Cuando cierro los ojos y canto la canción, siento más las letras e imagino la sensación que quiero transmitir. Cuando canto una canción pensando que esas letras son algo que he vivido, siento que puedo meterme un poco más en ella.

Jiwoo: Intento transmitir todo el ambiente y los matices posibles. Incluso cierro las cortinas y bajo la intensidad de las luces para poder concentrarme cuando estoy grabando.

Inma Exma: Ahora volvamos por un momento a vuestros días antes del debut. ¿Hay algo que en aquel momento pensabais que era imposible que pudierais hacer o conseguir, pero que finalmente lograsteis?

BM: Debutar en sí mismo era una idea muy lejana. Pero después de haber llegado hasta aquí, siento que todo es posible. Tenemos una dirección muy clara para nuestro grupo, así que siento que, llegados a este punto, el único camino es hacia arriba.

J.seph: Pensaba que todo eso del “debut” nunca sucedería en mi vida. Ahora que lo pienso, ¡he sido cantante durante siete años en un abrir y cerrar de ojos! Siempre ha habido momentos gloriosos, y creo que ha sido una gran fortuna poder vivirlos.

Inma Exma: Han pasado 7 años desde vuestro debut. ¿Cómo creéis que habéis cambiado y mejorado, tanto individualmente como como grupo, durante estos años?

BM: Musicalmente, tengo una dirección muy clara para nuestros futuros trabajos, tanto para el grupo como para mis canciones en solitario. Hay muchas cosas que necesitas aprender y tener en cuenta a la hora de seleccionar las canciones para un álbum, y siento que no he dejado de mejorar, haciendo que mi trabajo sea cada vez más emocionante a medida que pasa el tiempo.

J.seph: Hubo un momento en el que todo era mi primer debut, mi primer comeback, mi primera gira. Todo era desconocido y hubo momentos en los que me sentía un poco tonto. Incluso ahora, por supuesto, no creo estar completamente perfeccionado, pero estoy haciendo todo lo posible por desafiarme más y seguir desarrollándome constantemente.

Somin: ¡Creo que todos hemos evolucionado tanto individualmente como como grupo! Personalmente, me gusta pensar en la imagen que intento transmitir. Nos estamos asegurando de hacer que funcione y, como los cuatro miembros de KARD, hemos estado hablando mucho sobre el futuro de KARD y trabajando para hacerlo realidad. Constantemente pensamos en cómo podemos mostrarnos mejor en el futuro. Estamos deseando enseñaros cómo KARD continúa evolucionando.

Jiwoo: Estoy intentando centrarme en ser lo más objetiva posible. Al mismo tiempo, estoy intentando buscar cosas más creativas.

Inma Exma: En cuanto a la música, ¿hay algún estilo que os gustaría explorar y probar?

BM: El Hip-Hop y el R&B son los más importantes para mí. Me encanta bailar y estoy deseando lanzar este EP en solitario con sus propias actuaciones.

Somin: ¡Quiero probar un R&B realmente, realmente sexy!

Inma Exma: Más allá de las habilidades que un artista debería poseer para ser considerado un “artista”, ¿qué otras cualidades creéis que debe tener?

J.seph: Llegar a un compromiso con uno mismo. Supongo que uno no debería obsesionarse con sus defectos, que solo son visibles para uno mismo. Es entonces cuando las personas con las que trabajas pueden sentirse incómodas. Creo que tienes que llegar a un compromiso contigo mismo en ese sentido.

Jiwoo: Una mentalidad de nunca caer en la complacencia. Amar y apreciar a los fans. Gestionar tu vida privada.

Inma Exma: ¿Qué os gustaría decirles a vuestros fans españoles e internacionales?

J.seph: Gracias por formar parte de KARD y por mantener siempre el ánimo alto. Siempre trabajaremos duro para asegurarnos de que vuestro KARD favorito se vea genial. Estoy muy agradecido y feliz por todo vuestro increíble apoyo continuo.

Jiwoo: ¡Hidden Kards de España! Ha pasado un tiempo y estoy muy emocionada por volver a veros. ¿No nos habéis olvidado, verdad? ¡Nos vemos pronto en el concierto!
