[EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW] KARD: The Journey Matters More Than the Destination [ENG/ES]

For KARD, it seems that the most important part of a journey has never been knowing exactly where it will take them. After years of moving from one city to the next, performing for audiences around the world and growing together along the way, what matters most is who they get to share that journey with.

Spain has been part of that journey for years, and now KARD are returning once again, this time to Barcelona for their first concert in the city. Ahead of the show, Inma Exma spoke with the four members about what Spain means to them, the memories they have created with HIDDEN KARD, and how their perspective on their journey has changed over the years.

We also talked about Where To Now? (Part.2) : NOWHERE, an album that finds KARD reflecting on the present rather than rushing towards the next destination. The members opened up about the more personal sides of themselves explored through their solo tracks, the process of finding music that genuinely feels like KARD, and the energy they continue to draw from audiences across Europe.

From the moments that have challenged them to the memories they hope their music will leave behind, KARD offer a glimpse of what lies beneath the performances — and of the people who have made the journey worth taking.

The Conversation

Barcelona & HIDDEN KARD

Inma Exma: Welcome to Barcelona! It’s so great to have you here. You’re back in Spain, and after performing in so many different cities around the world, every place probably becomes connected to a different memory. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think about KARD and Spain?

BM: The first thing that comes to mind is genuine, passionate love. Spain has always been a special place for KARD and a stop that we would hate to miss whenever we are in Europe. We’re so grateful to be here and share a night with our HIDDEN KARDs in Barcelona, especially since it’s our first time here.

Looking at KARD Today

Inma Exma: You’ve been KARD for many years, so there are probably parts of this journey that only the four of you truly understand. Looking at where you are today, what is something about KARD’s journey that feels completely different from what you imagined when you first started?

BM: Whenever you’re at the beginning, you always dream big and imagine the future holding many amazing things. Within this process, there have been so many ups and downs for us, which ultimately made us really be able to appreciate the support of HIDDEN KARD. It’s different from what we imagined, for sure, but in a way that has brought us so much more gratitude as artists. I wouldn’t have wanted it to go any other way.

Where To Now? (Part.2) : NOWHERE

 

Inma Exma: You recently released your album Where To Now? (Part.2): NOWHERE, and I really loved the concept behind the title. It feels like you’re asking yourselves where to go next, but at the same time choosing to stay in the present. After spending so many years constantly moving forward and searching for the next goal, what does “NOWHERE” mean to KARD now?

BM: “NOWHERE” means to us that there’s less significance in where you’re going and more in who you’re with on the journey. As human beings, we get lost in the numbers and accolades and forget that none of these things matter if you have no one to celebrate them with. As the “D” in KARD represents HIDDEN KARD, and with this being our last album within the scope of our current contract, we wanted to share our deepest appreciation for everyone who has been with us for the ride and to finally let HIDDENS know that it’s never been about how far or how high we can go, but more about how long we can stay together.

The Four Solo Tracks

 

Inma Exma: Another thing I really loved about the album is that each member has a solo track, giving us a chance to see a more personal side of each of you. What did you each want to express about yourselves through your solo, and was there anything you discovered about yourself during the process?

SOMIN: Through the experience we’ve built up during our time as KARD, we really wanted to show the kind of music that each of us had personally wanted to pursue. Through our solo songs, you can see sides of us that we haven’t been able to show as KARD. I also believe that all of these individual experiences come together and allow us to create music that feels even more authentic to KARD. Since we had spent ten years promoting only as KARD, preparing solo songs came with some challenges. But overcoming those difficulties gave me confidence. I realized that if I get another opportunity in the future, I’ll be able to do even better and that I’m capable of doing it.

A Message to Your Future Selves

 

Inma Exma: If you could secretly leave one sentence inside the album for your future selves to find ten years from now, what would you write?

SOMIN: I want to tell myself, “Don’t hesitate and just do it.” I tend to overthink before doing something, so there’s always a question mark in my mind. I want to get rid of those doubts and just go for it.

The Creative Process

 

Inma Exma: Moving on to the creative process behind KARD’s music, when you first hear a demo, what makes you think, “This could really work for KARD”? Is it the melody, the rhythm, your vocal parts, the performance you imagine…?

SOMIN: Whenever we choose a song, we always imagine what we would look like performing it on stage. We also think about whether we’ll be able to share that powerful energy with our fans. Since we tour a lot, I think we tend to choose songs that really allow us to showcase our performance skills on stage.

Finding the KARD Identity

 

Inma Exma: When you’re working on a new song, has there ever been a moment when you realized that something sounded good, but it simply didn’t feel like KARD? How do you recognize that difference?

JIWOO: All artists and all kinds of music are great, of course, but I think we tend to avoid songs that immediately sound like they’re specifically for a boy group or a girl group. Since we’re a co-ed group, when I listen to a song, I also think about things like where and how the guys’ rap parts could fit into it.

The Sound of European Concerts

 

Inma Exma: KARD have built a very special connection with HIDDEN KARD around the world, and your European concerts have their own unique atmosphere. If you could keep just one sound from your European concerts forever, what would it be — the screaming, the fan chants, everyone singing along, or something else?

JIWOO: Definitely the cheers from our fans. I had a particularly memorable experience in Madrid. The schedule for this tour was extremely tight. We left early in the morning after our Barcelona show, caught a flight, and had another concert that same day. I hadn’t gotten any sleep, so I was really worried about how I would manage. But hearing the fans cheering and seeing the excitement in their eyes gave me so much energy that performing that day didn’t feel exhausting at all. It was only possible because you all gave us so much energy.

Connecting with European HIDDEN KARD

 

Inma Exma: There is something very special about connecting with an audience even when you don’t necessarily share the same language. When you perform in Europe, is there a moment during the show when you can really feel the audience becoming one with you? What does that moment feel like from the stage?

JIWOO: I feel like we become one when we look into each other’s eyes and sing together.

Growing Together

 

Inma Exma: After all these years together, you have probably learned a lot from one another, both on and off stage. What is one thing you’ve learned from another member that you could never have learned from a teacher, choreographer or anyone else?

J.seph: I think it would have to be my sense of time. I used to have a habit of being late and would often make mistakes because of what people commonly call “Korean time.” But I’ve learned to be much more punctual, and as a result, I’ve also become better at managing my own time and having more time to spare. I think that’s been a really positive change for me.

KARD’s Legacy

Inma Exma: After everything you’ve experienced as KARD, if you could choose just one feeling that you want someone to have when they listen to a KARD song ten, twenty or even thirty years from now, what would you want them to feel?

J.seph: I hope it captures a sense of youth and becomes a beautiful memory for you. When you look back on these moments someday, I hope you’ll think, “We were so radiant back then. We really shined.”

A Message to Spanish & European HIDDEN KARD

Inma Exma: To finish, after everything you’ve experienced as KARD and after the journey you’ve shared with your fans, what would you like to say to the Spanish and European HIDDEN KARD who have been walking alongside KARD all these years?

J.seph: Thank you so much for always coming back to see KARD and never forgetting about us. You’re all faces that we always miss and long to see, so whenever we’re together, I want to take in the smiles of our HIDDEN KARDs who give us so much love and keep those moments close to my heart. Thank you, always. We love you.

With their first Barcelona concert now behind them, KARD leave Spain with another memory to share with HIDDEN KARD. After so many years of music, performances and moments shared with their fans, their words throughout this conversation make one thing clear: the journey itself has become just as important as the destination.

La conversación

Barcelona y HIDDEN KARD

Inma Exma: ¡Bienvenidos a Barcelona! Es genial teneros aquí. Habéis vuelto a España y, después de actuar en tantas ciudades diferentes alrededor del mundo, probablemente cada lugar acaba estando ligado a un recuerdo distinto. ¿Qué es lo primero que os viene a la mente cuando pensáis en KARD y España?

BM: Lo primero que me viene a la mente es un amor genuino y apasionado. España siempre ha sido un lugar especial para KARD y una parada que no querríamos perdernos cuando estamos de gira por Europa. Estamos muy agradecidos de estar aquí y de poder compartir una noche con nuestros HIDDEN KARD en Barcelona, especialmente porque es nuestra primera vez aquí.

Mirando al KARD de hoy

Inma Exma: Lleváis muchos años siendo KARD, así que probablemente hay partes de este viaje que solo vosotros cuatro podéis entender realmente. Mirando dónde estáis hoy, ¿qué es algo del camino de KARD que resulta completamente diferente de lo que imaginabais cuando empezasteis?

BM: Cuando estás al principio, siempre sueñas a lo grande e imaginas que el futuro estará lleno de cosas increíbles. A lo largo de este proceso, hemos vivido muchos altibajos, y eso hizo que apreciáramos todavía más el apoyo de HIDDEN KARD. Es diferente de lo que imaginábamos, eso está claro, pero de una manera que nos ha hecho sentir mucha más gratitud como artistas. No habría querido que fuera de otra manera.

Where To Now? (Part.2) : NOWHERE

Inma Exma: Hace poco publicasteis vuestro álbum Where To Now? (Part.2) : NOWHERE, y me encantó el concepto detrás del título. Da la sensación de que os estáis preguntando adónde ir después, pero al mismo tiempo estáis eligiendo quedaros en el presente. Después de pasar tantos años avanzando constantemente y buscando el siguiente objetivo, ¿qué significa ahora “NOWHERE” para KARD?

BM: Para nosotros, “NOWHERE” significa que importa menos adónde vas y más con quién haces el camino. Como seres humanos, nos perdemos entre las cifras y los reconocimientos y olvidamos que nada de eso importa si no tienes a nadie con quien celebrarlo. Como la “D” de KARD representa a HIDDEN KARD, y este es nuestro último álbum dentro del marco de nuestro contrato actual, queríamos compartir nuestro más profundo agradecimiento con todas las personas que han estado con nosotros durante este recorrido y, por fin, hacer saber a HIDDEN KARD que nunca se ha tratado de hasta dónde o qué tan alto podemos llegar, sino de cuánto tiempo podemos permanecer juntos.

Las cuatro canciones en solitario

Inma Exma: Otra cosa que me encantó del álbum es que cada miembro tiene una canción en solitario, lo que nos permite conocer una faceta más personal de cada uno. ¿Qué queríais expresar sobre vosotros mismos a través de vuestra canción en solitario? ¿Y hubo algo que descubrierais sobre vosotros mismos durante el proceso?

SOMIN: A través de toda la experiencia que hemos adquirido durante nuestro tiempo como KARD, realmente queríamos mostrar el tipo de música que cada uno de nosotros quería explorar personalmente. A través de nuestras canciones en solitario, podéis ver facetas de nosotros que no hemos podido mostrar como KARD. También creo que todas estas experiencias individuales se unen y nos permiten crear una música que se siente todavía más auténtica para KARD. Como habíamos pasado diez años promocionándonos únicamente como KARD, preparar canciones en solitario supuso algunos retos. Pero superar esas dificultades me dio confianza. Me di cuenta de que, si tengo otra oportunidad en el futuro, podré hacerlo todavía mejor y de que soy capaz de hacerlo.

Un mensaje para vuestro yo del futuro

Inma Exma: Si pudierais dejar en secreto una frase dentro del álbum para que vuestro yo del futuro la encontrara dentro de diez años, ¿qué escribiríais?

SOMIN: Quiero decirme a mí misma: “No lo dudes y simplemente hazlo”. Tiendo a pensar demasiado antes de hacer algo, así que siempre hay un signo de interrogación en mi cabeza. Quiero deshacerme de esas dudas y simplemente lanzarme.

El proceso creativo

Inma Exma: Pasando al proceso creativo detrás de la música de KARD, cuando escucháis una demo por primera vez, ¿qué hace que penséis: “Esto realmente podría funcionar para KARD”? ¿Es la melodía, el ritmo, vuestras partes vocales, la actuación que imagináis…?

SOMIN: Cuando elegimos una canción, siempre imaginamos cómo nos veríamos interpretándola sobre el escenario. También pensamos si podremos compartir esa energía tan potente con nuestros fans. Como hacemos muchas giras, creo que tendemos a elegir canciones que realmente nos permitan mostrar nuestras habilidades como artistas sobre el escenario.

Encontrar la identidad de KARD

Inma Exma: Cuando estáis trabajando en una canción nueva, ¿ha habido alguna vez un momento en el que os habéis dado cuenta de que algo sonaba bien, pero simplemente no se sentía como KARD? ¿Cómo reconocéis esa diferencia?

JIWOO: Todos los artistas y todos los tipos de música son geniales, por supuesto, pero creo que tendemos a evitar canciones que inmediatamente suenan como si estuvieran hechas específicamente para un grupo masculino o un grupo femenino. Como somos un grupo mixto, cuando escucho una canción también pienso en cosas como dónde y cómo podrían encajar las partes de rap de los chicos.

El sonido de los conciertos europeos

Inma Exma: KARD ha creado una conexión muy especial con HIDDEN KARD en todo el mundo, y vuestros conciertos europeos tienen su propia atmósfera única. Si pudierais conservar para siempre un solo sonido de vuestros conciertos en Europa, ¿cuál sería: los gritos, los fan chants, todo el mundo cantando con vosotros o algo diferente?

JIWOO: Sin duda, los gritos y los ánimos de nuestros fans. Tuve una experiencia especialmente memorable en Madrid. El calendario de esta gira era extremadamente ajustado. Salimos temprano por la mañana después de nuestro concierto en Barcelona, cogimos un vuelo y tuvimos otro concierto ese mismo día. No había dormido nada, así que estaba muy preocupada por cómo conseguiría hacerlo. Pero escuchar a los fans animándonos y ver la emoción en sus ojos me dio tanta energía que actuar ese día no me pareció agotador en absoluto. Solo fue posible porque vosotros nos disteis muchísima energía.

Conectando con HIDDEN KARD en Europa

Inma Exma: Hay algo muy especial en conectar con un público incluso cuando no necesariamente compartís el mismo idioma. Cuando actuáis en Europa, ¿hay algún momento durante el concierto en el que realmente podáis sentir que el público se convierte en uno con vosotros? ¿Qué se siente desde el escenario?

JIWOO: Siento que nos convertimos en uno cuando nos miramos a los ojos y cantamos juntos.

Creciendo juntos

Inma Exma: Después de tantos años juntos, probablemente habéis aprendido mucho los unos de los otros, tanto dentro como fuera del escenario. ¿Qué es algo que has aprendido de otro miembro que nunca podrías haber aprendido de un profesor, un coreógrafo o cualquier otra persona?

J.seph: Creo que tendría que ser mi sentido del tiempo. Antes tenía la costumbre de llegar tarde y a menudo cometía errores por lo que comúnmente se conoce como “Korean time”. Pero he aprendido a ser mucho más puntual y, como resultado, también he mejorado a la hora de gestionar mi propio tiempo y de disponer de más tiempo libre. Creo que ha sido un cambio muy positivo para mí.

El legado de KARD

Inma Exma: Después de todo lo que habéis vivido como KARD, si pudierais elegir una sola sensación que quisierais que alguien tuviera al escuchar una canción de KARD dentro de diez, veinte o incluso treinta años, ¿qué os gustaría que sintiera?

J.seph: Espero que transmita una sensación de juventud y que se convierta en un bonito recuerdo para vosotros. Cuando algún día miréis atrás y recordéis estos momentos, espero que penséis: “Éramos tan radiantes entonces. Realmente brillábamos”.

Mensaje para HIDDEN KARD de España y Europa

Inma Exma: Para terminar, después de todo lo que habéis vivido como KARD y del camino que habéis compartido con vuestros fans, ¿qué os gustaría decirles a los HIDDEN KARD de España y Europa que han caminado junto a KARD durante todos estos años?

J.seph: Muchísimas gracias por volver siempre a ver a KARD y por no olvidaros nunca de nosotros. Sois rostros que siempre echamos de menos y que estamos deseando volver a ver, así que cada vez que estamos juntos quiero disfrutar de las sonrisas de nuestros HIDDEN KARD, que nos dan tanto amor, y guardar esos momentos cerca de mi corazón. Gracias, siempre. Os queremos.

Con su primer concierto en Barcelona ya a sus espaldas, KARD se despide de España llevándose consigo otro recuerdo que compartir con HIDDEN KARD.
